In a study of children aged 5-17, Molteni et al. asked adult proxies to report on pediatric illness duration and symptoms using a mobile application between March 2020 and February 2021. A total 258, 790 children were reported on by adult proxies, of whom, 75, 529 were tested for SARS-CoV-2. Of the 1,734 patients who tested positive during the study window, the median duration of illness was six days overall; however, median illness duration was 7 days for the older group (ages 12-17) compared to 5 days for the younger group (ages 5-11). A total 77 (4.4%) of children had symptoms 28 days after diagnosis and 1.8% had symptoms 56 days after diagnosis. Of those with a prolonged illness duration of at least 28 days, the most common symptoms were fatigue (84%), headache (78%), and anosmia (78%). Findings from this study supports the evidence that COVID-19 typically has a short duration of illness among school-aged children in the UK.
