This study analyzed the impact of racial discrimination on health behavior in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample consisted of 210 adults in Alberta, Canada, who identified as visible racial minorities. Respondents were recruited through an online panel which was representative of the Canadian population. Data were collected through an online survey in April 2020. Fifty six percent of respondents reported experiencing racial discrimination in the past month, particularly Asian adults. Discrimination was strongly associated with increased substance use and less sleep among respondents. The study called for further research and interventions to address and reduce discrimination in order to improve health and well-being for visible racial minority groups during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
