Rao et al. led a multi-national investigation into how the coronavirus pandemic impacted the global care of small and sick newborns. Through surveys, authors collected experiences of healthcare providers (HCPs) from 62 countries (n=1120). Forty-three percent of respondents were from Africa and 43% were nurses. Overall, HCPs felt underprepared for COVID-19 and frequently mentioned early shortages of personal protective equipment. Over 85% and 89% of HCPs were concerned about their own health and reported increased stress, respectively. Many respondents reported that kangaroo mother care (KMC) services had been discontinued at their center (37%), indicating disruptions to evidence-based practices. Authors emphasized the importance of providing support to neonatal HCPs and retaining life-saving interventions such as KMC in the midst of this pandemic.
