Using data from the United States (USA) COVID-19 Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) from March 1 to August 1, 2020. The authors described the epidemiological characteristics of adults aged 18 and 49 years with no underlying conditions, who were hospitalized for COVID-19, pregnant women were excluded. Adults ages 18 to 49 accounted for about a third of all hospitalizations. Among adults, approximately 20% of those without associated risk factors experienced a serious illness that required ICU care. They found that, although Hispanic people they represent only 16% of the population, 42% of hospitalized adults were Hispanic. These findings confirm what was reported in previous studies, that in the absence of underlying conditions, male sex can increase the risk of severe COVID-19. Even among young adults. More studies are needed to better explain why Hispanics or Latinos may be overrepresented in COVID-19 related hospitalizations.
